Biography

Originally trained on the violin by a master violinist who owned a Stradivarius known as "The Rose," James Durham's early exposure to music included mainly classical influences such as Grieg and Schubert. With an ear tuned to melodic progressions, arpeggios and sweeping orchestral textures, James was fascinated by synthesizers the second he set eyes (and ears) on one. He purchased his first synthesizer as a young teenager, when he started composing his first songs.

Completely self-taught on keyboard, music production and music engineering, over the years James created a large collection of original songs and compositions in a broad range of styles. Meanwhile, he recorded, produced and/or collaborated with other artists on projects ranging from traditional jazz to alternative rock. His songwriting and producing have been widely praised and his first personal release of his own music took place in 2003 with Aeolian May: Port of Embarkation.

James comes from an award-winning professional background of multimedia development and consulting for web, video, CD-ROM and DVD projects, and for years even earned his living as a computer programmer. He brings this background and skillset to the table of his music projects, which gives him a unique perspective of the "other side" of the projects he works on, and the producers and collaborators he engages with. His multimedia clients have ranged over the years from Borders Books to IBM to the Federal Highway Administration.

James has recently developed a passion for film/TV scoring and ethereal sound design, and continues other music productions and creative collaborations. From the upbeat theme song for the pilot of Teen Travel Notes to the otherworldly sounds of his upcoming electronica album Arothea: The First Attempt at Breaking the World to the dark and humorous hybrid-noir project FETIDUS: The Damned Heir, James' creative projects span many genres, and he is constantly open to new creative collaborations.
